Iroquois is one of over 500 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The National Wildlife Refuge System is a network of lands and waters managed specifically for the protection of wildlife habitat and represents the most comprehensive wildlife management program in the world.

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge lies within the rural township of Alabama, New York, midway between Buffalo and Rochester.  Part of what locals call the Alabama Swamps, its 10,818 acres of freshwater marsh, and hardwood swamps, bounded by woods, forests, pastures and wet meadows serve the habitat needs of many animals as a stopover point for migrating birds and as a year-round residence.

Three nature trails and four overlooks are open year-round, sunrise to sunset for wildlife observation.  A visitor center is located at 1101 Casey Road.  Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is seeking new members.
